What is Dry Shampoo?

I know we’ve all been fooled by the name ‘dry shampoo’ and think it actually cleans our hair. But it is not actually a shampoo, it is a dry powder that absorbs excess oils on the scalp.

So if you have naturally oily hair or don’t want to wash your hair everyday, then a dry shampoo can help refresh it!

Why Make Your Own Dry Shampoo?

Making your own DIY dry shampoo means you can use 100% natural ingredients and you don’t have to spend a fortune!

It will eliminate greasy hair and oil on the scalp! It is also extremely simple to make, you can customise the ingredients to suit your hair type and it only takes 5 minutes!

Commercial dry shampoos always leave hair feeling dry or damaged. They are either full of chemicals and solvents or they sell a fancy bottle of just bicarb and sell it for over £10!

I’ve never found a dry shampoo I like and I’ve tried a lot of different brands!

Potential Risks of Dry Shampoo

Commercial dry shampoo can be damaging to the hair. They often contain alcohols to dry up the oil in hair, however this can cause damage and breakage.

Using any dry shampoo for a long period of time can cause build up in the hair. However, it is suitable to use occasionally between washes.

How to Make Dry Shampoo

DIY dry shampoo is very easy to make and it only uses a few ingredients.

We have seen a lot of recipes online using either cornstarch or arrowroot powder with cocoa powder to make a dry shampoo. However, this is not as effective as the ingredients we have chosen.

We have specifically selected 100% natural ingredients that are amazing at absorbing oils and also don't leave hair looking white after!

Dry Shampoo Ingredients

1. Weight out the ingredients

  • Weigh the bentonite clay, rice starch, arrowroot powder and sodium bicarbonate.

2. Combine the ingredients together

  • In a bowl, mix the ingredients together until fully combined.
  • Now your DIY dry shampoo is ready to use.

TIP: The Soapery team has tested this dry shampoo and we love it! It is very effective at absorbing oil on the roots.

When applying the dry shampoo, make sure to rub it into the hair well and then brush it through. This will help ensure the powder cannot be seen.

When making the dry shampoo, you may need to sieve some of the powders to ensure there are no clumps, as these will show up on your hair!

How to Use Homemade Dry Shampoo?

DIY dry shampoo is in a powder form, so it isn’t applied like a spray dry shampoo.

One way to apply dry shampoo is packing it in a reused baby powder bottle. This type of bottle easily distributes the powder over the roots of your hair.

If you do not have one of these to use, you can simply use a makeup brush to dust the powder over the roots of your hair.

However you choose to apply the powder, you must rub it in and brush it through after to ensure it is evenly spread throughout your hair. If the dry shampoo has not been brushed through, it will leave obvious powder on your roots and potentially leave discoloured looking hair.

Homemade Dry Shampoo For Dark Hair With Cocoa Powder And Charcoal Powder

Want to Make a Coloured Dry Shampoo?

If you have dark hair, black hair, light brown hair, red hair or any other hair color, you may find the dry shampoo is too light for your roots.

We have tested this on darker roots and it does blend in nicely if you rub it in well and brush it through. However, if you don't like this version, you can try these variation:

  • Brown hair - Add cocoa powder in small amounts until you reach a suitable colour. You can also add charcoal powder to the cocoa powder if you need to create a darker brown.
  • Black hair - Add activated charcoal powder in small amounts until you reach the desired colour.
  • Red hair - Add cinnamon powder in small amounts to reach the colour you are looking for.

You can mix any of these colours if you need to. We recommend taking a small amount of the dry shampoo and testing how much colourant you will need, before adding it to the whole mixture.

Do not use too much of the colourants as they may colour the scalp or clothing if too much is added. Please note, this is not suitable as a temporary root colour.
