What Is Cocoa Butter?

Organic cocoa butter is pressed from cocoa beans and is yellow in colour. It is a solid and hard oil at room temperature, but can be melted at 40C.

Our cacao butter is unrefined and organic so it has a strong, natural chocolate scent and it hasn’t been subjected to any harsh chemical processes or been deodorised.

The INCI name of cacao butter is theobroma cacao seed butter.

Benefits of Cocoa Butter

Unrefined cocoa butter is often used for its moisturising properties, as it is high in fatty acids which can help add hydration. It is believed to help prevent and reduce stretch marks, but there is no scientific evidence to support this.

It is also often used for the lips and is a popular ingredient in lip balms. Pure organic cacao butter is rich in fatty acids which helps create a protective barrier and retain moisture.

How to Use It

Organic cocoa butter can be added to cosmetic recipes for added benefits, especially on dry areas to help hydrate and nourish it. It can be used on the face too, but can clog pores easily. It is popularly used in lip balms, moisturisers, creams, body butters and lotions. For our cocoa lotion bar recipe click here.

Cocoa Butter FAQs

What is raw cocoa butter good for?

Organic unrefined cacao butter is great for the skin. It is a popular ingredient in a lot of cosmetic products like creams and body butters. It is also great for lips as moisturises them and acts as a protective barrier.

Can you use raw cocoa butter on your skin?

Yes, pure cacao butter is often used to moisturise dry skin. The melted butter can be added to recipes for lotions or creams. Organic cocoa butter can also be easily absorbed without leaving a greasy residue.

Can I use raw cocoa butter on my face?

Organic raw cocoa butter can be used on the face, however it has a high comedogenic rating of 4. This means it will clog pores and is not recommended for acne prone skin.

Does cocoa butter darken skin?

No, cacao butter does not darken skin. It is a natural moisturiser that hydrates and nourishes skin.

What does raw cocoa butter smell like?

Organic cocoa butter has a natural chocolate smell as it is not refined, so the scent and colour have not been removed.

Is cocoa butter the same as coconut butter?

Cocoa butter and coconut butter are not the same products. Cocoa butter is very solid and brittle and can take longer to melt. Whereas coconut oil melts a lot easier at temperatures of around 25C.

Both products have benefits for the skin like moisturising and nourishing. They are also popular as ingredients in many cosmetic products.

Coconut is popularly used in hair care as well as it leaves hair shinier and hydrated. Whereas, organic cacao butter is perfect for skin care products like creams and lotions.

Is refined or unrefined cocoa butter better?

We prefer unrefined cocoa butter because it hasn't been through the same chemical processes as refined cocoa butter. Nothing beats the natural chocolate scent of cocoa butter!

Where is your cacao butter from?

Our cacao butter is produced from theobroma cacao beans that have been sourced from around the world. Some are from Africa, and some from South America. The cocoa beans are then brought to Europe for processing, and then we bring the cocoa butter to the United Kingdom, ready for your cosmetic recipes!
