Epsom Salt (FCC/BP Grade)
What is epsom salt?
Epsom salts are a naturally occurring compound, originally found hundreds of years ago. This vegan friendly, natural product was discovered in the natural springs of Epsom, in England.
It is though to be a salt due to its name and clear white crystal formation. However, epsom salt is not a salt and is a mineral found in water.
It is made up of magnesium, sulfate and oxygen in a rock-like formation, also known as magnesium sulphate.
Epsom salt is not the same as regular salt as these are made of different elements. Regular salt is sodium chloride, which is used as an edible table salt.
Magnesium sulphate can not be used as table salt as it has a very bitter taste and is not meant for internal use.
What is epsom salt used for?
Epsom salts are great in a bath salt, body scrub, exfoliating treatment and for foot soaking. It is mainly used as a bath salt as it is said to help relax and soak aching muscles.
Epsom salts are also used for scrubs like a foot scrub or body scrub. These are great for exfoliating dead skin, leaving skin smooth and soft.
Epsom salt for skin
Epsom salts are generally safe for dry and sensitive skin. However, when using a bath salt, if irritation occurs stop bathing as this could be an allergic reaction.
It is recommended to do a patch test and seek medical advice before using epsom salt for individuals with a medical condition and very sensitive skin.
Avoid contact with broken skin as this could worsen the irritation and cause discomfort.
It is suggested that Epsom bath salts can help general skin health by soothing and exfoliating skin. However, if too much bath salt is added, it may not be beneficial.
Too much epsom salt in a bath could cause dry skin and other side effects, so make sure to add small amounts to start with.
Difference between epsom salt and sea salt
Sea salt is naturally produced through evaporating salt water. Epsom salts are a mineral found in water. These are very different and are used for different purposes.
Sea salt is made up of is sodium chloride that can be used as table salt. Epsom salt has a similar crystal structure to sea salts, making it seem the same.
Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is not suitable as a table salt, but can be used in bath salts and other cosmetic products.
