The Ins-And-Outs of Making Bath Bombs: Our Advice

There’s nothing more fun than mixing up a batch of bath bombs!

Whether you’re brand new to the crafting world or a bath and body expert, with the right bath bomb ingredients, and a creative vision, you’ll be well on your way to bath bomb brilliance! But where to begin?

Before getting started, it’s important to understand the bath bomb basics. These fun-packed fizzing sensations are made up of just two main ingredients; citric acid and baking soda. Whilst our makers love adding everything from pigment powders to dry botanicals to their mixes (adding Polysorbate 80 can be a great way to ensure oils and colours disperse more evenly), these two are all it takes to get things bubbling.

To make your own bath bombs, start by mixing the dry ingredients, such as citric acid and bicarbonate of soda, in a large bowl. Finally, a little liquid (usually a carrier oil) can take your creation from prone powder to a fully mouldable mix ready for shaping.

Incorporating Epsom salt into your bath bomb recipe can enhance the soothing and relaxing properties of your bath, making it a perfect addition for a spa-like experience.

For an extra touch of luxury, consider incorporating nourishing oils like apricot kernel oil into your bath bomb recipe. These oils not only add a moisturizing element to your bath but also help to create a smoother, more cohesive mixture. Decorative elements like flower petals or glitter can also be added to give your bath bombs a unique and beautiful finish.

Our top tip for aspiring bath bomb alchemists? Get the fizz factor just right! After all, there’s nothing more disappointing than a bath with no bubbles! Achieving the perfect finish can be easier said than done, though.

Bath bombs are notoriously finicky when it comes to ingredient ratios and moisture; if you don’t get things just right, you’re bound to be dealing with crumbling, crumbs, and a lack of foam. SLSA is one of our markers’ favourite ‘secret’ ingredients for promoting floating and foaming.

If you’re struggling with achieving the perfect end result, we recommend sticking to a simple recipe. There’s nothing better than a tried and tested process, after all! If things still aren’t quite right, our top trouble-shooters suggest adding some more citric acid to the mix! Plus, storing your finished products in moisture-fighting plastic wraps can help post-making.

Buying Bath Bomb Ingredients: FAQs

What is a bath bomb?

A bath bomb is a compact blend, typically round, made from a mix of baking soda and citric acid. This combination is responsible for the characteristic fizz when the bath bomb hits the water. Alongside these base ingredients, bath bombs often contain essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus for aromatherapy, natural oils such as coconut or almond oil for skin moisturisation, and botanicals for an enhanced sensory experience. Many also include colourful pigments for visual flair.

When you drop a bath bomb into your bath, it effervesces, releasing all these ingredients to create a luxurious, spa-like experience.

What is polysorbate 80?

Polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier and solubiliser. It’s most often used to blend oil and water-based products together in cosmetic creations - but has gained particular popularity amongst bath bomb makers thanks to its unique benefits.

When used in bath bombs, polysorbate 80 makes the best possible use of mica - dispersing it evenly throughout the bath water for a pigment-packed bath, whilst preventing colour buildup on the skin and bathroom fixtures.

This brilliant ingredient also helps any oils added to the bath bomb spread more evenly through water - meaning pools of oil on top of your bath water will no longer be a worry!

What ingredients do I need to make bath bombs?

Bath bombs may seem like a complex mish-mash of every cosmetic ingredient under the sun, but, at their most basic, are actually relatively simple! You'll need a base of baking soda and citric acid, mixed with a moist ingredient such as a butter or carrier oil.

Want to elevate your bath bombs? Essential oils are perfect for adding natural fragrance and act as a binder. For vibrant color and shimmer, try mica powders. To ensure even dispersal in water without oily residue, add a bit of Polysorbate 80. And to really ensure that your final bath bombs float and fizz as they should, sprinkle in some SLSA.

How to add scent to bath bombs?

Want to know how to scent your bath bombs? We’ve got just the thing.

When it comes to all-natural fragrance agents, there’s one option that trumps all others - essential oils. These powerful plant concentrates pack an aromatic punch, delivering a full-bodied, lasting scent experience with as little as a few drops used. Whether you’re looking for a lavender scent set to relax, or the perfect refreshing citrus fragrance, they’re a safe bet.

Simply mix your final choices in with your dry ingredients, and you’ll soon be shipping out beautiful bath bombs set to wow your friends, family, and customers.

How to add colour to bath bombs?

Looking for a way to make your fizzy creations really pop? Colour is the perfect option! From muted natural palettes perfect for a calming bathing experience to rainbow shade stories, the options are endless.

One way to achieve an eye-catching look on an all-natural basis is mixing in a pinch (or pot) of mica powder! These pigment-packed minerals pack a punch when it comes to aesthetics, providing both a huge range of colours to choose from and a unique, shimmery finish bound to catch any eye!

Some bath bomb makers prefer using liquid pigments, but be sure to use them sparingly as a little goes a long way - plus adding too much moisture to your mix can cause premature fizzing. To achieve the perfect colour, start with a small amount and gradually add more until you reach your desired shade.

Are bath bombs good for skin?

Bath bombs aren’t just about creating a gorgeously colourful, foamy bath - though there’s no arguing that we all love the final effects! These uniquely fizzy bath products can also be formulated to provide benefits to the skin and body. In addition, butters and oils - from coconut to shea and beyond - can help deliver some great moisturising effects to dry and irritated skin.

Why aren’t my bath bombs fizzing?

Nailing that perfect fizzy effect can be tricky, even for experienced bath bomb makers. Luckily, our community has some top troubleshooting tips. If you’re in a bath bomb bind, try some of the following:

  • Double-check your ratios. The success of your bath bombs is reliant on an exact combination of ingredients working in perfect harmony. If your balance is off, fizzing will likely be the first thing affected.
  • Ensure you’ve made the right fragrance oil choice. Some options are known to inhibit bath bombs’ foaming abilities.
  • Experiment with sizes and shapes. Surface area plays a role in the ‘fizzability’ of bath bombs. Sometimes, in order to get the best possible end result, you’ll have to downsize.
  • Store well! Premature exposure to moisture can hugely impact bath bomb fizzing. Keep your finished creations out of humid environments, and preferably within an airtight container.

Why are my bath bombs crumbly?

Are your bath bombs leaving you in a crumbly conundrum? Don’t worry - there are plenty of ways to get your recipe back on track.

In most cases, a loose bath bomb is caused by ratio issues - likely an excess of dry ingredients over wet. Be sure to read up on different formulation tips and recipes in order to achieve the perfect balance - not skimping on binding ingredients like oils and butters.

If you’re still having trouble with your finished products, why not try tightening your mould? This should help prevent the weak spots known to lead to crumbling.

What is SLSA?

SLSA is a gentle, natural surfactant that provides a rich, stable lather in bath bombs, shampoos and other cosmetics. In the soap and cosmetics-making community, its gained a positive reputation thanks to its mildness - making it a good alternative to SLS for many ‘sensitive skin’ recipes. These properties are carried over from its coconut and palm oil base - both of which contribute to its ability to produce a thick, creamy lather.

Appearance-wise, this surfactant is a white powder relatively fine in grain size - think somewhere between bicarbonate of soda and citric acid.

It’s mostly used in bath bombs thanks to its ability to help them float and foam as they should.
