What is cream of tartar?

Cream of tartar is a white powder often used in bath bombs to help create a better fizz.

Cream of tartar is also known as potassium bitartrate or potassium hydrogen tartrate, and it is an acidic byproduct of fermenting grapes into wine. Cream of tartar is made by combining tartaric acid with potassium hydroxide. 

What does cream of tartar do? 

Cream of tartar is often used in bath bombs to harden them. This helps the bath bombs keep its shape when put in water. It also has a binding effect which can help hold the ingredients together. Because of its fine texture, it smooths out the mixture, giving the bath bombs a smoother and silky texture.

When adding cream of tartar to bath bombs along with citric acid, the bath bombs will fizz more and make more bubbles. 

What is cream of tartar used for?

Cream of tartar is used in many products and processes like baking, cosmetics and as a cleaning agent. In cosmetics, cream of tartar is added to bath bombs to help harden the mixture, add a silky texture and create more bubbles when added to water. 

Is cream of tartar the same as baking powder?

Cream of tartar and baking powder are not the same. Cream of tartar consists of tartaric acid and is a byproduct of wine making. Baking powder is made with cream of tartar and baking soda.
