How to Make a Bronzer

Tired of using bronzers that are full of chemicals?

There are hundreds of different commercial bronzers online, but it’s almost impossible to find a natural bronzer! So we’ve created this all natural bronzer recipe so you know exactly what is going on your skin.

Our bronzer recipe is really simple and customisable so it is great for beginners!

Why Make Your Own Bronzer?

Homemade bronzers can be made from the comfort of your own home with just a few ingredients!

Many commercial bronzers contain ingredients like talc, silicone and other chemicals that are drying and irritating. Our bronzer recipe only uses natural and gentle ingredients that are great for the skin.

Not only is it more natural, but you can also adjust the colours to create a bronzer you love!

Simple Bronzer Recipe

In this recipe we are using arrowroot powder as a base. Arrowroot powder is suitable for all skin types and it is really lightweight and gentle.

We are using argan oil to slightly compact the powdered ingredients together. Argan oil is a super lightweight oil and doesn’t clog pores so it is the perfect choice for this recipe. To colour the bronzer we are using iron oxides to create a tone that looks natural on the skin.

Ingredients:

Method:

Arrowroot Powder and Iron Oxides

1. Weigh the powders

  • Weigh the arrowroot powder into a bowl.
  • Add the yellow iron oxide, red iron oxide and black iron oxide into the arrowroot.
  • Mix all of the ingredients together until fully combined (if there are any lumps, you may need to sieve the powder).

2. Add the argan oil

  • Weigh out the argan oil and pour it into the powder mixture.
  • Mix the oil and powder together until everything is fully combined. At this stage the oil will stick to clumps of powder, so make sure it is evenly mixed in.

3. Pour into a container

  • Pour the powder mixture into a container of your choice.
  • Carefully press the powder down so it is compact in the container and not a loose powder. You can use any flat ended item to press this down and it doesn’t need to be perfect!

TIPS: This recipe makes a light shade bronzer that is a great base to darken if needed. We have tried and tested this recipe and it is so simple and easily customisable!

How to Make Different Shades

When making a bronzer, the shade is going to be different for everyone. Our recipe creates a basic light shade bronzer to start off with, but you may need to darken this to suit your skin tone better.

To darken the bronzer add black iron oxide and mix really well. It is important to keep adding red and yellow oxide as you darken the bronzer, as it brings warmth and stops it from becoming a ‘muddy’ colour.

When adjusting the colour of your bronzer you have to take it slow. Add your pigments in really small amounts (we recommend a gram at a time) and mix them in completely before adding any other pigments.

It is all about being experimental, as only you know what shade is going to suit you the best!

Here are some basic guidelines to create some different shades:
